Improve Rattan Weaving Skills

support the strengthening of the KUPS Management Institution which is known as a peat swamp economic business group, in this case the rattan commodity is one of the businesses that is still running and needs attention because from the data[1] that was examined, KUPS Rattan Gohong received a gold title[2] while for KUPS Rattan Buntoi received a silver award[3].

This form of support is of course part of improving community welfare. One of the follow-up plans for institutional assessments carried out in the previous year stated strengthening the capacity of KUPS for orderly administration/reporting and financial order; marketing training, as well as improving skills in making the latest woven motifs.

Referring to this, it is necessary to provide training on rattan weaving for KUPS Rattan LPHD Gohong and KUPS Rattan LPHD Buntoi by training on the neatness of raw materials that are ready to be woven and selecting raw materials from rattan that is ready to be woven. The aim of this activity is to provide new insight into the rattan craftsmen of Gohong and Buntoi Villages; provide new skills in how to select, handle raw materials until they are ready to weave with high selling value; and creating and building relationships for marketing rattan from Gohong and Buntoi Villages. Training will be held on 27-30 November 2023 in Buntoi and Gohong Villages. Niang (45) as an expert who facilitated the training.

The training begins with an introduction to high-value rattan raw materials by selecting rattan materials that are still round/whole. Continue with the initial drying process, removing the epidermis/ maruntih, second drying, and the process of disposing of books from rattan/ ngalingking. Then an explanation of the process of splitting whole rattan into several parts according to the size of the sheet/strand to be made. After that, the planing process is carried out using a jangat/manjangat tool, in the form of two small knife blades stuck in a round piece of wood usually called a jangat. Just explained successively the first process of manjangat by removing the inside of the rattan/rattan heart; the second manjangat process involves removing the uneven edges of the rattan until it becomes an even sheet/strand; The third manjangat process involves repeatedly removing the heart of the rattan to produce the same level of thinness.

Handling of high-value rattan raw materials involves the process of scraping and shaving with a knife or langgei. This is done repeatedly until it produces thin rattan strands that are easy to weave and shape according to the product you want to make. Then Niang gave an explanation about choosing rattan strands that had been shaved to be separated according to the desired color. After that, we enter the preparation stage for the coloring process. Soaking in mud overnight (from 17.00 to 08.00), which aims to bind the color to the rattan sheets that we will make. Another alternative is to soak rusty iron mixed with vinegar.

Niang practices the introduction of high-value rattan raw materials, where the soaked sheets are taken and cleaned to enter the dyeing process. This is then followed by the process of boiling water in a panic. Meanwhile, the coloring materials are prepared by looking for tapanggang leaves, kalabuau leaves, turmeric. For the record, the yellow color requires turmeric and whiting.

Niang also introduced a way to handle high-value rattan raw materials, namely by boiling for approximately 3-4 hours on a medium stove fire. Followed by the practice of handling high-value rattan raw materials, while waiting for the boiling process, the scraping process is carried out. Next is the practice of weaving.
