Increasing Community Income from Fish Processing

Fish processing is one of the important sectors in the fishing industry which has great potential in increasing the added value of fishery products for the peat swamp economic business group or KUPS (Social Forestry Business Group). Social Forestry Business Group (KUPS) as a community-based start-up business in and around the forest. This group was formed with people who care about forests. One of the supports in this program is to empower the community’s economy through KUPS.

The Integrated Management of Peat Forest Ecosystems (PTEHG) Program in Kahayan Hilir District supports the strengthening of peat swamp economic business groups to increase resources and group income, facilitating fish processing training in Mantaren I, Kalawa and Buntoi Villages which will be held on 14-16 November 2023.

The diversity of fish types in the Kahayan Hilir area, opportunities for developing fish processing businesses and marketing processed fish products are potential and challenges that can be exploited by local business groups. One of them is processing freshwater (river) fish.

“Fish processing training is needed to provide knowledge and skills to peat swamp economic business groups or fish farmers and fisheries business actors in order to improve the quality and competitiveness of fish products at market level,” said Onasis as KUPS Manager of KPSHK. (11/14)

Onasis said that fish processing for the peat swamp economic business group or KUPS (Social Forestry Business Group) was accompanied by a facilitator who was an expert in fish processing, namely Supeni. Supeni (44) is a fish processing expert and owner of Robin Food & Snack which has been established since 2017.

“The aim of processing is so that the fish does not rot easily so it can be used. Types of freshwater fish in the village include papuyu, catfish, tilapia, saluang, baung, belida, sepat, all of which can be processed and used to make fish floss, amplang, fish crackers, wadi, salted fish as processed fish that have high economic value. ,” explained Supeni during the training. Supeni added that in processing finished goods, where there is production, it means there is also a product for sale. That’s why it is very important to have a strategy in product marketing so that we can see more opportunities and also sell our goods on the market. In the current digital era, business actors inevitably have to be digitally literate because there are many digital/e-commerce platforms as a place for business actors to sell their products online on digital platforms.

“We must be able to utilize the marketplace and social media well. “Social media plays a very important role in this digital era because most consumers and business people themselves are very familiar with social media as a place for friendship and buying and selling,” said Supeni (16/11)

According to Supeni, apart from utilizing digital platforms, marketplaces and social media, offline marketing also provides a high opportunity for promoting the goods or products being sold. Offline marketing can be done by participating in bazaars, exhibitions, expos, consignment at souvenir shops or modern retailers. Apart from that, business groups also need to complete promotional needs, such as brochures, business cards and relations too.

The fish processing training accompanied by Supeni began with an introduction to fish processing equipment, then practice making processed fish in the form of fish crackers, nugets and areca root cakes.

“I am a business person who taught myself or was self-taught from YouTube. However, most of the training that takes place is only from village officials, not from the business actors themselves. “So with this training, we business actors will be greatly helped to develop processed fish products and improve group skills,” said Jambun as a wadi fish business actor. The benefits of fish processing are to increase economic value and slow down the process of fish spoilage. Thus, fish processing training, such as making nuggets, crackers and areca roots, can help peat swamp economic business groups increase the added value of the fish products they produce. Through diversification of fish processing, it is hoped that it can increase people’s income as well as provide a solution for the use of fish that is economical and has high value.
