Peatland forest areas are important ecosystems in mitigating and adapting to climate change. Peatlands store 20 times more carbon than mineral soil tropical rainforests. Integrated Management of the Peat Forest Ecosystem (PTEHG) in Kahayan Hilir is one of the objectives of the peat forest protection and restoration program from deforestation and forest degradation due to forest and land fires and large changes in forest function in 2015 and 2019.
The Earthood team carried out monitoring visits at 4 LPHD TPS Seedlings which will later be used for peatland rehabilitation in 4 areas of Gohong Village Forest, Kalawa Village Forest, Mantaren I Village Forest, and Buntoi Village Forest in Kahayan Hilir District, Pulang Pisau Regency, Central Kalimantan. 3,551 hectares of the total Village Forest area of 16,245 hectares.
Remaining consistent in carrying out various efforts to prevent forest and land fires, KPSHK carries out monitoring, determining policies, preventing and collaborating with the government. In 2023, KPSHK has mobilized the LPHD TPK and TPH Karhutla teams to mitigate forest and land fire incidents by increasing efforts to control forest and land fires by carrying out integrated patrols, building fire watch towers and canal blocks, online monitoring, and empowering local communities in areas prone to forest and land fires.
KPSHK has made various efforts to improve the 4 HD peat ecosystem. Each LPHD TPS in 4HD has prepared several types of trees, namely Balangeran (Shorea balangeran), Jelutung (Dyera lowii), Pulai (Alstonia spatulata) and MPTS plant types, namely Gemor (Nothaphoebe coriacea), Paken (Durio kutejensis). The selection of tree species to be planted in the planting area is the result of CCB KPSHK activities to collect data and analyze them as native plants and vitality in peat forests.
It is hoped that the benefits from restoration from the impacts of forest and land fires will help increase biodiversity on land and water, have a source of carbon reserves that produce large production and potential, strive to maintain ecosystem balance as a sustainable step in the use of natural resources to meet the needs of local communities for the future. will come.
“Prosperous Community Sustainable Forests,” said LPHD Chairman Gohong Yanto L Adam, shouting this slogan after planting Pantung/Jelutung tree seedlings with the Earthood Team.
The friendliness, openness and enthusiasm of the KPSHK and LPHD Gohong teams welcoming the visit of the Earthood team to the LPHD Gohong TPS created close proximity in monitoring and evaluation activities. At the end of the monitoring, KPSHK invited Earthood to plant Pantung/Jelutung tree seedlings as a symbol of remembrance and enthusiasm for the team at the Gohong LPHD TPS.
