Creative Economy through Kelulut Honey Cultivation

The Social Forestry Business Group (KUPS) is a business group from the Village Forest Management Institute (LPHD) which has carried out community-based businesses in and around the forest. This group was formed with people who care about forests. One of the business developments by KUPS is Kelulut honey.

Madu kelulut (Trigona Honey Bee) is a species of stingless bee that produces honey with high quality and health benefits. Kelulut honey is one of the types of honey produced by Trigona bees. This honey is also known as stingless bee honey or meliponin honey. Kelulut honey has several advantages compared to regular honey, such as having a higher water content, high antioxidant content, and lower total carbohydrates. Kelulut honey has many benefits for the body’s health, such as helping to heal wounds, prevent infection, and overcome inflammation. In addition, kelulut honey can also help improve the immune system and maintain skin health. Several articles also discuss the training of honey bee cultivation and the processing of honey products, including kelulut honey. [1]

Kelulut honey cultivation can help conserve this species, which in turn will support ecosystem sustainability. KPSHK held Honey Cultivation Training, Identification of Bee Feed Types and Honey Product Processing Training on 16 – 19 January 2024 in Buntoi Village and Kalawa Subdistrict. This activity was attended by 69 people from KUPS Madu Gohong, KUPS Buntoi, KUPS Kalawa who were accompanied by training experts, namely Syaifuddin (30).

“Kelulut Honey (Trigona Honey Bee) is a species of stingless bee that produces honey with high quality and health benefits,” said Rokhmond Onasis as KUPS Manager KPSHK

Onasis added that Kelulut honey contains nutrients, antioxidants and other bioactive compounds that support human health. Therefore, Kelulut honey cultivation has become relevant in an effort to meet the demand for natural and healthy products. Kelulut honey also has an important role in maintaining biodiversity and the environment. Kelulut honey cultivation can help conserve this species, which in turn will support ecosystem sustainability.

“Going into business, including cultivating kelulut honey and honey bees, must foster a business spirit in the environment, build self-confidence, develop ideas, optimize technology in promoting products,” said Syaifuddin in delivering the training.

Syaifuddin continued that the tips for becoming an entrepreneur at a young age are to have clear goals, have a good plan, stay strong and never give up and take the time to regularly check honey.

According to Syaifuddin, the process of making trigona bee toppings begins with making a trigona bee box that must be the appropriate size, if the size is larger then they will eat the existing resin and also cause mold. The way to deal with fungus in a box is by applying honey to the fungus and then the bee box must be neat and there are no small holes that make it easier for ants to enter (closed). The trigpna planting process to make honey harvesting easier is by breeding forest bees into livestock bees and the honey from the logs must be taken first.

“Honey is indeed promising if we work hard and never give up,” stressed Syaifuddin

Syaifuddin added that cultivating an entrepreneurial spirit through honey cultivation requires being able to obtain information and use it for business progress to be able to lead many people and invest time in developing oneself and acting innovatively so that the marketing of honey cultivation can continue.

The ability to create something new or find ideas through creative thinking will open up opportunities for society to develop honey cultivation to create a creative economy.
