To prepare for the risk of forest and land fires during the dry season and to celebrate the 79th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia’s independence, the Forestry and Forestry Service (KPSHK), along with four Forestry and Forestry Management Institutions (LPHD) in Kahayan Hilir District, held a competition themed “Kahanjak Darung Bawan.” The hot sun during the dry season did not dampen the enthusiasm of the students who participated in the peatland wetting competition. They demonstrated strong dedication and determination. The land wetting competition raised awareness of the importance of sustainable peatland management. Their enthusiasm was evident in every step, hand movement, look in their eyes, and cheerful laughter. This provided a ray of hope that the younger generation would contribute to environmental conservation and fire prevention in peatland forests. One of the competitions was Peatland Wetting.

The peatland wetting competition was attended by students from five high schools in Pulang Pisau Regency which was held on August 20, 2024. The five schools are SMAN 1 Pulang Pisau, SMAN 2 Pulang Pisau, SMKN 1 Pulang Pisau, SMKN 2 Pulang Pisau and SMAS PGRI Pulang Pisau.

“Socialization and invitations for participants began on August 12, 2024, at seven schools in Kahayan Hilir District. The hope is that each school will send two teams of 10 students, each consisting of eleventh and twelveth grade students,” said Rokhmond Onasis, the person in charge of the Peatland Wetting Competition.

Onasis explained that by the registration deadline, five teams from five schools had already been drawn. The schools learned that the eleventh grade students had already had their own school schedules. Meanwhile, the twelveth grade students were focused on studying for exams and internships.

Prior to the competition, participants participated in peatland rewetting training on August 19, 2024. The training was conducted in collaboration with Manggala Agni and the Pulang Pisau Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). “On behalf of the Pulang Pisau BPBD, I truly appreciate competitions like this. We hope that competitions like this will increase the number and quality of young people who love and care about the condition of peat forests, especially in Pulang Pisau,” said Tekson, Head of the Pulang Pisau Regency BPBD, during the training session.

To broaden their knowledge, participants received training on peatland and forest and land fires. In addition to soft skills, participants were also equipped with hard skills on implementing forest and land fire patrol teams and using firefighting equipment.

“The land rewetting competition was held at each school in an area that could serve as a model for land rewetting,” said Onasis.

According to Onasis, the location was chosen not in a peatland area but within the school grounds. This was to ensure safety and ensure the smooth running of the activity. Furthermore, he noted that the school grounds also served as an educational platform, garnering attention from teachers and his classmates who were not participating in the competition.

“The judges for the competition are from Manggala Agni, the Pulang Pisau Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KPSHK). The peatland rewetting competition will be judged based on teamwork, dexterity, and video production results,” said Onasis.

It is hoped that the peatland rewetting competition involving students will increase the insight, awareness, and participation of other young people around the village forest.
